Most companies release a flagship phone once a year, but this year, Samsung have surprised us all by releasing an update to their flagship a mere six months after the original. And what a phone this is. It’s got everything the original had, and more, most notably a huge screen. After a troubling couple of years trying to stay on top of the market, Samsung have shown us all that they really have what it takes to make a phone that’s not only beautiful and powerful, but that’s innovative too. Why should you get one? Where to start? Performance is absolutely incredible, and that screen is unbelievable. And, of course, you get all the regular flagship features that you’d expect to see. If you’re looking for an amazing mobile, then this is it. The new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge + will satisfy even the most demanding of users.
Undeniably this is a Samsung phone, with its elegant curves and slim lines. And yet this is a full metal unibody mobile, only fourth that the manufacturer have released so far. Build quality is excellent, and that screen curves all the way around the front to meet a metal rim, and then a glass back. Sleek and definitely stylish, the S6 Edge + is a looker. It’s also comfortable to use, fitting nicely in the hand, despite the larger size. Under the hood you’re looking at serious power, with top notch processors and plenty of RAM. Screen specs are some of the best on the market, if not the best, and there’s some nice cameras thrown in for good measure. All around you’re looking at a true flagship, a phone that’s going to be top of the performance stakes as well as the envy of your designer friends. The original S6 Edge was a great phone, did it really need an update? Maybe not, but we’re glad it got one anyway. The S6 Edge + is stunning, powerful, sexy and even better than the original, so who wouldn’t want to get their hands on one?
Hold on to your hats, because before we get to the main event of the screen we need to talk about what’s driving the S6 Edge +. Under the hood you’re getting octo core processing power. That’s two quad core CPUs, one a hearty 2.1 GHz model, the other a 1.5 GHz model. And you’re getting upgraded RAM too, with 4 GB of RAM compared to the original model’s 3 GB. Bottom line? The S6 Edge + is seriously fast, not to mention responsive. As all Samsung’s top end phones have been for the last few years, this is an Android model. It’s running the newest Android available, 5.1 Lollipop, out of the box. That means more customisation options, more security and some nice new features too. We’re particular fans of the ability to separate your business and personal profiles on Lollipop, meaning you won’t drunk text your boss… In terms of performance, we don’t think that the S6 Edge + can be beaten, at least not right now. These internal specs are mind blowing, and the performance just proves that. From multiple tabs on internet browsers to CPU intensive gaming, the S6 Edge + handles it all without a single hiccup.
So, that screen… This is the real selling point of the S6 Edge +, and it’s frankly amazing. The Edge, as Samsung calls it, is an extension of the main screen that curves around the long edges of the front panel, letting you see a newsfeed, calling info, an alarm clock, whatever you like. It also function as a control panel for the cameras or the music player as well. The display is a whopping 5.7 inches, but that just means easy on screen typing and great viewing, though using it one handed is pretty much a no no. But size isn’t everything, as we’re often told, so what about resolution? Well, you’re getting 1440 x 2560 pixels (making for a PPI of around 518), and you’re also getting Samsung’s signature Super AMOLED display. Those two factors combined mean that the display on the S6 Edge + is bright, sharp, clear and really flawless. From HD video to picture editing, the display on the S6 Edge + is incredible, and that extra size just means you have more space to play with. Add in the Edge, which gives you more flexibility in using your mobile, and you’ve got the perfect display. Yes, this is this phone’s selling point, but it’s a darn good one, and one that’s going to appeal to a lot of customers.
Have Samsung skimped in the camera department? Of course not, this is a flagship, after all. Though you’re not getting the highest camera resolutions around, you are getting some very respectable specs. The front camera is a 5 MP model, which is pretty good for taking selfies and video calling, which is all you’ll probably be using it for. Behind you’re getting a 16 MP camera, which isn’t quite as high as some around, but is fairly decent. Plus, the S6 Edge + has an f1.9 aperture for capturing more light, making this one of the best low light photography options around. You’ll get your usual list of extras too: optical image stabilisation, face recognition, auto focus, and LED flash, and you also get the ability to live stream to YouTube if you want. Software is fast to open and intuitive to use, meaning that these cameras are simple in terms of operation. And resolution aside, pics look great. Pro photographers might not be happy, but the rest of us will like being able to take good pics with the minimum of hassle.
In terms of special features, there isn’t a lot that the S6 Edge + can do that the original S6 Edge couldn’t, but then, the original was pretty awe inspiring. You’ll get your heart rate monitor and fingerprint scanner, of course, and that scanner is the same press to scan rather than swipe to scan that we saw on the S6 Edge (far easier to use). Pressing the home key twice launches the camera app in less than a second, regardless of which screen you happen to be on, what Samsung are touting as a quick launch camera option. This actually works very well, and it’s handy for taking the odd pic when you’re in a hurry. Last, but not least, you’re getting wireless charging too, so you don’t need to keep your phone tied to a cable all the time, which is convenient to say the least.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge + is an awesome phone, we can’t deny that. The curved screen is pretty cool, but this isn’t a gimmicky phone. You’re getting something with high end specs, excellent performance, cool special features, and a mobile that looks fantastic too, and you can’t say fairer than that. Obviously you’ll be getting 4G, 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth, as you would expect. However, you will not be getting expandable storage. This particular model has 32 GB of internal storage and no SD card slot, so you can’t add in any more. This is due to that metal unibody design, which doesn’t allow the back panel to be opened. Any criticisms? Battery life isn’t fantastic, and that bigger screen drains the battery a little faster than we’d like, and we’re never big fans of no SD card slots. But these are fairly minor issues, and the overall excellence of the S6 Edge + really does make up for them. Other than that, there’s really nothing else we’d change. If you want the best phone around, then the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge + really has to be top of your list right now!
