A mere six months after releasing the original S6 Edge, Samsung have launched the new Galaxy S6 Edge +, bigger and better than before. This is going to be Europe’s answer to the Galaxy Note (which won’t be sold here), thus explaining that bigger screen. But display aside, this is an awesome phone, with great performance. Samsung once more show us that they’ve really got what it takes to make a killer phone, and one that you’re going to love.
Why should you be dying to get one? That screen, for one, but also super fast speeds and responsiveness, and even a couple of decent cameras as well. Plus, the S6 Edge + doesn’t skimp when it comes to looks either. If you’re in the market for a top end phone, then the S6 Edge + from Samsung should be a clear winner.
Style is what we’ve come to expect from Samsung, and the S6 Edge + has sleek, sexy lines and curves and a nice metal unibody design as well. Build quality is second to none, and the phone fits nicely in the hand too. In terms of screen, the display curves around the front panel at the sides to a metal rim, and then there’s a glass back plate. For looks, we can’t help but give the S6 Edge + a gold star.
Looks aren’t everything though, but that’s not a problem here. Under the cover you’re looking at impressive power and performance specs, with octo core CPU and plenty of RAM. Add in two very respectable cameras and you’ve got what could be the ideal mobile. It’s not going to come cheap, of course, but with specs like these we wouldn’t expect it to.
Overall, you’re getting a high end phone that really ticks all the boxes. All those impressive specs in an attractive shell mean that this is going to be high on most people’s lists this year when it comes to new phones. And it’s a mobile that isn’t going to disappoint.
Okay, we’ll deal with the glaringly obvious first. The display on the S6 Edge + is the obvious selling point of the device, and it’s a good one. The Edge is simply an extension of the main screen that wraps around the sides of the phone and can be used to show calling info, newsfeeds, whatever you like. It also works as a controller for things like the cameras and the music player, leaving your main screen for the important stuff. You’re getting a whopping 5.7 inches of display space here, so typing is easy and viewing is really a pleasure, though using the device one handed is really out of the question.
On top of plenty of space, you’re also getting some nice display specs, making for a very enviable picture. This model has 1440 x 2560 pixel resolution (giving you around 518 PPI), and it’s a Samsung signature Super AMOLED screen too. What does that mean in reality? It means you’re getting a sharp, clear picture that has excellent colour reproduction.
Whatever you want to do, from picture editing to HD video watching, the display on the S6 Edge + is really second to none. You’d be hard pressed to find a better screen than this, and there’s a solid reason why it’s the device’s main selling point.
Leaving that screen for a while, let’s have a look at performance here, and you’ve got nothing to worry about. The S6 Edge + sports octo core processing power, with two quad core CPUs on board (one 2.1 GHz and one 1.5 GHz). There’s also a full 4 GB of RAM, unlike the original S6 Edge which had only 3 GB. All this means a phone that’s very responsive and very, very fast.
Most Samsungs are Android devices, and the S6 Edge + is no exception. You’ll be running Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, the most recent incarnation. This gives you more security and stability as well as a heap of new features. Our favourite in this department is the ability to keep two separate user profiles, allowing you to have a business and a personal profile on the same phone (or to have a profile for your kid, for example).
Power and performance are all important when buying a new mobile, and the S6 Edge + doesn’t disappoint in the slightest. We expect the best from Samsung phones, and with the S6 Edge + you’re really getting it.
We’ll be honest and say that these aren’t the highest resolution cameras on the market, but they are both very respectable. At the front the S6 Edge + has a solid 5 MP camera, which should be more than enough resolution for selfies and video calling.
At the rear you’re looking at a 16 MP cam, which in itself isn’t bad. But there’s also an f1.9 aperture, meaning that the S6 Edge + can catch more light resulting in great low light photography. There are some nice camera extras too: LED flash, optical image stabilisation, auto focus, face recognition, and you can also live stream to YouTube as well.
Professional photographers might not be satisfied with these camera specs, but regular customers will find that the S6 Edge + takes some very nice pictures indeed. Colour reproduction in particular is very good.
In terms of special features, there are no real surprises here when compared to the original S6 Edge. You’ll get a built in heart rate monitor and fingerprint scanner (press to scan rather than swipe to scan, so more reliable than older models).
You also get wireless charging, so you don’t need to tie your phone to a cable. And there’s NFC as well, so digital payment systems should work just fine (as well as things like NFC tags, which can be useful).
There is a nice camera feature, which Samsung call “quick to launch.” By hitting the home screen key twice you launch the camera app from any screen in less than a second, meaning taking pictures on the run just got a lot easier.

If you want the best mobile phone on the market today, then the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge + may well be it. Great performance, awesome screen, solid cameras, and some nifty features mean that this is a real flagship phone, and one that will satisfy even demanding users.
Connectivity wise you’ll get what you expect: 3G, 4G, WiFi and Bluetooth. However, due to the unibody design (which means non removable back panel and battery) you won’t be getting expandable storage. There’s no SD card slot, but you do get 32 GB of internal storage, which is a good amount.
Anything we don’t like? We’re never big fans of non removable batteries and non expandable storage, but these are the price we pay for unibody design, so there’s no point complaining about them. On the whole, we love the Samsung Galaxy S6 +, it’s a great phone and it has great performance. Shopping for a top end mobile? Then this is a model you’ll definitely want to check out.
