About the Galaxy S5

After the astounding success of the Galaxy S3 and S4 models, you’d think that Samsung might sit back on their laurels for a while, but the all new Galaxy S5 proves that the company have still got what it takes to be a market leader. With all these high end specs, the only thing we’re worried about is whether Samsung will be able to beat them again with next year’s model.

What can you look forward to in a brand new S5? Plenty of power for one, as well as a truly top of the line display. The big difference on the new S5 though is just how easy the Samsung user interface is compared to earlier models. Fast, attractive and easy to use, the Galaxy S5 is another winner from Samsung.

Key Features on the Samsung Galaxy S5

We’ve come to expect the best from Samsung, and the S5 is no disappointment in that respect. It’s call all the high end specs that we’d expect to see, and it’s pretty good looking too. The bad news is that Samsung are still using plastic casing, unlike other, metal bodied, flagship phones. The good news is that the plastic is light and feels solid in the hand, a vast improvement over the flimsier S4 model.

Internally you’re looking at really the best that money can buy. From processing power to RAM, from camera specs to screen materials, the S5 is a beautiful device. There are some nifty new features thrown into the mix as well, including a handy little heart rate monitor for all the health nuts out there.

The Samsung Galaxy S5 is a super space age joy of a phone. There’s a reason that Samsung are the best selling phone manufacturer on the market, and the Galaxy S5 is their crowning achievement.

The Internals and Operating System

At the heart  of every smart phone is a processor, the engine that drives your mobile. Samsung have equipped the S5 with a huge, quad core 2.5 GHz monster of a processor as well as with 2 GB of RAM. That means lightening speeds and immediate responsiveness, both of which give you the kind of fast phone experience that you’re looking for.

Given that this is a flagship phone, then you’re obviously getting the latest operating system to run it. In this case that means the all new Android 4.4 Kit Kat. Better speeds, new features and nifty tricks go along with the customisable Android characteristics that we all love. The biggest update on the new OS is far better voice recognition, which means that your S5 can finally give Apple’s Siri a run for her money.

Big Screen, Big Specs

We’ve come to expect something a little special in a Samsung Galaxy display, and the S5 is sporting an incredible display. First up, it’s grown a little since the old S4, and the display is now 5.1 inches, giving you that much more space to play around with.

This is a Super AMOLED display, so it’s got excellent colour reproduction, and solid resolution as well. With 1080 x 1920 pixels and 432 PPI, the picture quality on the S5 is simply unbelievable. It’s sharp, bright and beautiful, perfect for playing video in full HD, or even editing those brilliant photos that you’re going to be taking.

Top End Camera

And your photos are going to be brilliant with the S5. Samsung have upped camera resolution as well, and you’re now getting a solid 16 MP cam rather than the 13 MP camera on the older S4. That’s some good resolution, though other phones can beat it, but what they can’t beat is the full range of features that the S5 offers.

This phone camera has everything you could possibly need to take the perfect picture. There’s burst and panorama modes, obviously. But there’s also LED flash and super fast auto focus- you can focus and take your snap in 0.3 seconds, so you’re not going to miss anything here.

The S5 also has selective focus and GIF animation software too. This really is a stunning collection of camera features, and one that just can’t be beaten at the moment.

Smoother Interface

One complaint that many customers had with the Galaxy S3 and S4 was Samsung’s TouchWiz user interface that overlays the Android operating system. Samsung have put a lot of effort into making the user interface on the S5 smoother and simpler than previous incarnations.

Bloatware has now been sealed off into a separate folder, so you’re no longer forced to take up home screen space with icons for things that you don’t want and don’t use. Built in apps like the planning function have been slimmed down and made far more intuitive to use as well.

You’re getting a few extras on top of the user interface too, including a split screen mode that will allow you to have two apps open and viewable at the same time.

Bonus Features

There are a couple of bonus features on the S5 as well. Samsung have emulated Apple’s fingerprint locking system, so the S5 now has added security and recognises fingerprints for online payments as well.

There’s also a built in heart rate monitor. This is hardly a necessity, but it does pair very well with the host of health and fitness apps that Samsung have equipped the S5 with. If ever there was a smart phone to force you into getting to the gym, the Galaxy S5 is certainly it.

Galaxy S5 Review

The Samsung Galaxy S5 has it all. 2.5 GHz of processing power, 2 GB of RAM, a stunning 5.1 inch Super AMOLED display, a 16 MP on board camera, and the list just goes on and on. Then there’s all those extra features too, like fingerprint locking and heart rate monitor.

There’s no shortage of connectivity options, 4G is going to give you super fast mobile internet speeds, and the latest Bluetooth version is going to make connections faster and more reliable too. You even get a built in barometer, so you might actually get an accurate weather forecast for once!

That’s not to say that there’s no room for improvement on the S5. We desperately want to see a metal bodied Galaxy in keeping with the HTC One M8 and the like. We’d also like to see a better screen to size ratio, since the S5 still has a lot of  bezel around the screen that seems like wasted space. On the whole though, the Galaxy S5 is everything we’d expected and more, it’s a truly great flagship smart phone.
