Plenty of power, dust and water resistant and all the bells and whistles that you’d expect from a Samsung Galaxy phone, all in a smaller package and for a lower price. If a big flagship phone isn’t your style, you’ll want to take a look at the Galaxy S5 Mini, so get started by browsing the deals below.
Mini phones are so often just a scaled down version of a regular model, and lack the kind of performance that we look for. However, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini, whilst it doesn’t quite match up to the regular S5’s specs, still gets some powerful performance and is certainly more portable than its behemoth big brother. Great performance and cool design make this an excellent mini mobile choice.
What should you be salivating over? How about the fact that the S5 Mini is both waterproof and dustproof? Or that it comes with the fingerprint scanner security system found on the regular S5? Or maybe just that it’s easy to carry around in your pocket and you don’t need to compromise too much when it comes to performance? If you’re looking for a great phone that’s easy to slip into your jeans then the S5 Mini is an ideal choice.
The Galaxy S5 Mini will look familiar to you, since it’s basically just a smaller version of the regular S5. There’s the same plastic polycarbonate body, the same metal rim and the same elegantly curved corners. This is the standard Samsung Galaxy design that we’ve come to know and love, and of course that back panel is fully removable so you can get at the battery if you need to.
Looks aside, there’s a lot to be excited about here. Processing power and RAM are impressive for a Mini phone model, the camera is decent, and the memory is expandable by means of the SD card slot (always useful). And you get extras thrown in too, like that fingerprint scanner and the fact that the S5 Mini is waterproof and dust proof.
It’s not often that a Mini flagship version really has the kind of specs that we’re looking for in a great phone, but the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini combines classic Samsung design with solid specs and some nice added features. All this means that the S5 Mini is an excellent choice if you’re looking for portability without compromising on features.
You’re not going to need to concern yourself with speed issues with the Galaxy S5 Mini. It’s sporting a quad core 1.4 GHz processor, making it snappy and capable. Couple that with 1.5 GB of RAM and you’re getting a phone that’s responsive and great at multi tasking and running multiple apps. Pretty much you can erase the word “lag” from you vocabulary, since you’re unlikely to experience it with the S5 Mini.
Sure, that processor power doesn’t quite match what you’d find on the regular S5 model, but for the average user there’s more power than you’d probably ever need. For day to day activities you’re not likely to notice much speed difference between the S5 Mini and the S5.
The S5 Mini is running the newest Android version- that’s 4.4 KitKat, giving you the ultimate in Android user experience. New features include far better voice recognition tech, plus a true full immersion mode which is perfect for reading on your device.
The user experience on the S5 Mini is pretty darn good though, and it really took a matter of minutes to start playing around and configuring things to our liking.
Thank God that Samsung have come to their senses in terms of screen size. The older Galaxy S4 Mini had a tiny 4.3 inch screen, but the S5 Mini has been bumped up to a much more satisfactory 4.5 inches, which makes more difference than you’d believe.
You’re looking at 720 x 1280 pixels and 326 PPI, so clarity is great and pictures are nice and sharp. And, since this is a Samsung, you’re getting a Super AMOLED screen too, with it’s bright, vivid colour reproduction. The screen on the S5 Mini is simply awesome to look at, even for HD.
To be perfectly honest, the main camera on the S5 Mini is nothing too special. It’s the 8 MP camera that we’d expect to see in this price range. You get autofocus and LED flash, making this pretty much the average mobile camera.
The front facing video conference cam is a little more exciting, since it’s a full 2.1 MP, which is pretty high resolution for a front camera. Professional photographers might not be happy with these camera specs, but the average user will find that they’re more than good enough for casual picture taking.
A Galaxy wouldn’t be a Galaxy without some fancy tech thrown in, and the S5 Mini is no exception. It does come with a fingerprint scanner security system, as the regular S5 does. This basically means that you don’t need to remember a password or passcode, but it also means that your phone is certified for PayPal payments, which might be convenient.
The S5 Mini is also IP67 certified, meaning that it’s dust proof and waterproof. Dropping your phone in the bath isn’t going to be a problem here. The regular S5 is also IP67 certified, but has a fiddly little panel over the charging slots, something that has been redesigned for the S5 Mini so that you no longer need to worry about replacing the panel after charging.
Finally, there’s that portability. The S5 Mini is pretty small, measuring in at 131 x 65 x 9 mm, and light too, weighing just 120 grams. Perfect for slipping into your pocket.

Finding a Mini phone that’s nicely portable but that hasn’t been scaled down so much that it lacks performance can be tough. The Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini has to be one of the best Mini models on the market at the moment, since it’s one of few that gets excellent performance despite it’s small size. There’s a solid camera, excellent screen specs and some nice added extras too. And you get all the regular suspects like full 4G capability.
Anything we’re not happy with? We would like to see Samsung make a non plastic phone, but even their top of the line flagships are all polycarbonate. We’d like a little more camera resolution too, bumping that 8 MP cam up to a nice 14 MP cam would make a big difference. However, for the money and the combination of performance specs, the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini is more than worth investing in.
