Samsung dominate the Android mobile market with their top end Galaxy S series phones. But with price tags on high end mobiles getting higher and higher, the manufacturer is now trying to break into the mid range market with their Galaxy A range. The A series seeks to bring the looks and features of the S series at a more reasonable price, and the A5 2017 edition is the top end A mobile. Does it have what it takes to win on the crowded mid-range shelf? Samsung are willing to bet that it does.
Why should you look forward to getting your hands on one? That full metal styling is beautiful, there’s plenty of power on board, and the A5 is even waterproof, always a nice touch. But it’s the top end Super AMOLED screen that really wins our hearts. If you’re looking for an awesome new phone that doesn’t cost the earth, then you’re looking for the Samsung Galaxy A5 2017.
The Galaxy A5 should be familiar to anyone that’s owned a Samsung Galaxy before, whether that’s the top end S7 or a more budget version. Copying the design and styling of the S7, the A5 gets a full metal and glass build, smooth, rounded corners and sleek, sharp edges. The back panel is gently curved too, fitting perfectly into the palm, ad the whole device both looks and feels premium (surprising at this price point).
Under the hood you’re getting some nice upgrades on last year’s A5 model. The processor has been ramped up to an octocore 1.9 model, rear camera specs have been improved, and more RAM has been added. You’re getting a waterproof model too, always handy for those that might not be as careful as they should be with their mobiles.
In basic terms this is as close to top end as a mid range phone can get. The A5 is shockingly similar to the high priced Galaxy S7, and that’s no bad thing. Sure, you’ll miss out on a few features, but at these prices, can you really complain? The Galaxy A5 is a superb phone, and the fact that it’s also affordable is really just a bonus.
Okay, let’s talk performance here, since that’s obviously key in your buying decision. The A5 is running a hefty octocore 1.9 GHz processor, plus there’s a whole 3 GB of RAM (more than we’d expect to see on a mid range mobile). Combined those two things make the A5 fast, responsive, and fantastic at multi tasking.
As is standard for Samsungs these days, the A5 is an Android device. Out of the box you’re getting Android 6.0 Marshmallow, but a upgrade to 7.0 Nougat is in the works. This means you’ll get the familiar customisation options and intuitive interface of Android, along with the security and stability of an up to date operating system.
Long story short: performance here is excellent. And not just excellent for a mid range phone, excellent across the board. You’ll get a snappy mobile that doesn’t lag, even when performing CPU intensive tasks. What more could you ask for?
Moving on to that display, and this is the real high point of the A5. You’re getting a good 5.2 inches of screen space here, which really is perfect. There’s plenty of room for on screen typing and video watching, but the A5 still fits snugly in the hand, and can be slid into your pocket. Plus, you can definitely use the A5 with one hand when necessary.
Resolution wise you’re looking at 1080 x 1920 pixels, so around 424 PPI, which is definitely high definition. And, of course, this is a Samsung signature Super AMOLED display. This means you’re getting a crisp, clear picture with excellent colour reproduction, deep blacks and bright whites. Lines are defined, and images are simply beautiful.
No matter what you’re doing, from game playing to HD video, from web surfing to emailing, the display on the A5 is an absolute pleasure to look at. And when it comes to size, the A5 is really just the perfect fit.
Samsung generally equip their phones with decent cameras, and the A5 is no exception to this rule. Starting at the front, you’re getting a full 16 MP camera. Yes, you read that right. 16 MP. One of the highest resolution front cams around, and perfect for those selfies. In fact, the front cam on the A5 is even better than the one on the Galaxy S7.
At the rear, you’re also getting a full 16 MP cam, which isn’t the highest res around, but it more than decent for a mid range mobile. That’s an f/1.9 aperture, 27 mm cam, for those in the know. And there’s the usual accessories, so LED flash, autofocus, face detection, panorama, HDR, geo tagging and touch focus too.
If you’re a big picture taker then the A5 isn’t going to disappoint. Particularly when it comes to that front facing camera. Pictures from the A5 are startlingly clear, get beautiful colour resolution, and are just brilliant. It’s tough to take a bad shot with cameras like these!
There aren’t a ton of extra features on the A5, but with such high basic specs for a mid range phone it’s unfair to expect too much more. There is a fingerprint scanner, so your data will be safe and you can use the various online payment services that require fingerprint security. The A5 is also IP68 certified, so it’s dustproof and waterproof for up to thirty minutes in up to 1.5 metres of water.
Battery life is excellent, thanks to the addition of a larger 3000 mAh battery (last year’s model topped out at 2900 mAh). So you should see a full day of use with the A5. But when it does come time to charge your phone, the A5 has fast charge technology, so you’ll fill up with juice faster than you might expect.

With surprisingly high end specs and a very affordable price tag, the Samsung Galaxy A5 2017 is quite simply one of the best mid range phones on the market. You get tons of power, a fantastic screen, great cameras, all bound up in a very stylish package. For bargain shoppers, the A5 has to be one of the best deals around.
When it comes to connectivity, you’re getting the usual suspects, so WiFi, Bluetooth, 3G and 4G. Internally you’re looking at 32 GB of RAM, however the A5 also accepts a Micro SD card for up to 256 GB of external storage. Space really shouldn’t be a problem here.
Right, so anything we didn’t like? Tough one. Not really, to be completely honest. The A5 is such a great combination of specs and price that there’s little to complain about. Wireless charging would be nice, but we feel ungrateful asking for it. The bottom line is that the Samsung Galaxy A5 is a fantastic mid range phone that just happens to perform like a top of the line device, and it’s a great buy!
