About the PhoneEasy 5516 Black

Swedish company Doro might not be the first name you think of when you think of mobile phones, but they have a very particular niche market. Doro specialises in making devices suitable for older users, who may be confused by the high-tech mobile options that are otherwise on shelves. And the new Doro 5516 is the perfect choice if you’re looking for simplicity, a traditional old-style mobile that still gets all the essentials done.

Why should you buy the 5516? It’s got a clear, easy to read colour screen, large buttons, and tonnes of battery life. Plus it’s got all necessary extras, like an emergency assistance button, and is compatible with hearing aids too. If you’re shopping for an older relative, or just looking for a straightforward mobile, then the Doro 5516 is going to be a fantastic choice.

Key Features on the Doro 5516

The Doro 5516 is a classic bar-shaped phone. It’s tough and feels very secure and robust in the hand. Corners are gently curved, as are the edges, meaning it slides easily into the pocket. This looks and feels like a phone that would happily withstand being dropped. And then there’s the traditional number keypad, no touch screen shenanigans here, and a high colour screen for clarity.

Aside from looks, the Doro 5516 offers a fair amount of impressive features too. Battery life is absolutely excellent, and the phone is designed with the older customer in mind. Physical shortcut buttons make accessing SMS and even the torch easy, and there’s an emergency assistant button too. All that, and a camera to boot.

Yes, this is a niche market phone, but that’s not a bad thing. And the Doro 5516 is amazing at what it does. It takes the hassle out of having a mobile. No distractions, no complications, just a pure, easy to use device.

Performance Specs

Performance isn’t at the heart of this phone. Yes, there’s a processor on board, but it’s nothing like the CPUs that run on smartphones. RAM isn’t a concern since there’s little multitasking even possible. Does that mean that the 5516 is slow? Not at all. Accessing contacts, texting, opening messages, all happen immediately with no delay. But speed isn’t a priority here, nor should it be.

And when it comes to operating system, you… don’t need one. No, seriously. There’s a proprietary OS on board, but with no touch screen and no internet access, there’s no reason to have a full Android or iOS version. And that only means that the 5516 is even simpler to use.

When we talk about phone performance, we talk about speeds and responsiveness and all that jazz. But with the Doro 5516, that’s unfair. This is a fantastic phone. It does everything it needs to do, operation is fully intuitive, and it doesn’t lag. And you can’t say fairer than that.

The Display and Keyboard

There is a full-colour display on the 5516, measuring in at 2.4 inches. And that gets 240 x 320 pixels. Remember that this isn’t a touchscreen, this is simply a notification screen, and as such it does the job brilliantly. Letter size is large and easy to read, and the display crisp enough and bright enough to read in full daylight (and maybe even without glasses!).

The Doro 5516 features a number pad keyboard, again making it easy to use. Button size is large, and keys are easy to press (and make a satisfying click so you know you’re doing the job). Texting is done the old fashioned way, with each number being assigned a group of letters. There is also a line of “hot keys” at the top of the phone, each offering a simple shortcut (we’ll get more detail on those later).

A Camera Too…

Whilst there’s no front facing camera, the Doro 5516 does offer a 2 MP rear camera. This should be more than enough for quick snaps, and since display size is small anyway there’s little loss of resolution.

This isn’t designed to be a camera phone, and it would be unfair to judge it as such. But when it comes to a handy little feature that will let you keep a snap of the grandkids, or take a picture of your shopping list or bus schedule, the camera on the 5516 is just perfect.

What Else?

There are a couple more things that we need to mention about the 5516. Firstly, let’s go back to those hotkeys. The four hotkeys across the top of the phone directly connect to open the camera, open up the SMS box, switch on the (blindingly bright) torch, and to connect to assistance. And the addition of a help button (which connects directly to emergency services) is a good one, giving peace of mind and added security.

Also know that the 5516 is compatible with most hearing aids, so the hearing impaired should have no problems. And the large text size (both on screen and on keys), as well as large button size, should help the visually impaired too.

The 5516 also connects to My Doro Manager, an online service that allows you to manage settings and content on your phone from the web. Perhaps more importantly, this also allows helpful friends or relatives to solve problems for you, no matter where they are.

Finally, though the 800 mAh battery might sound small, remember this is no smartphone. You’ll get at least a full day of use out of the Doro without charging, and well into the second day too!

Today’s smartphones can be just too much for older or very young consumers to handle. And that’s where Doro comes in. The new Doro 5516 is the perfect choice for a first phone or for grandma.
