"Mixed Feelings"

I loved it when I lived abroad and needed an occasional service with no monthly commitment.

Big negative is I can find no way to find out what I have been charged for. No call register or data usage that I can find. So instead of my £10 lasting 3 months or a year, sometimes it goes in 3 weeks for no apparent reason.

I'd expect an app that gave me all that info which I could access on wifi and then make choices.

"Flawed bundle management"

The EE network is good, the prices are competitive, operator wait times have been good. The SMS auto reoccurring top-up and bundle system is a mess.

I set up a reoccurring 30day £10 payment and then a reoccurring 30 day £10 bundle. This worked fine until the last day of the bundle when I got an SMS to say the bundle would expire 1 min to midnight and ensure payment was available, so less than 30days!

As my payment wouldn't go through until the next day I clearly had a problem. The obvious solution was for me to stop the auto top-up and restart it to get an immediate payment. So how to stop the auto top-up? The setup top-up SMS response didn't say. The bundle setup SMS response said stop auto but not what I needed. I searched the online help that said stop auto stops the top-up but that conflicts with the bundle SMS response so something is wrong with either the online or SMS response info.

At this point, I had to call an Asda mobile rep. They have hopefully fixed the problem. I'll find out tomorrow. How can something so fundamental to the service be such a mess? Online information is missing other obvious information like if what happens if you send an updated top-up instruction without cancelling an existing one?

Also when I initially called an operator to set up my credit card the details only got accepted as correct after the third time I entered everything. I'm positive I didn't make a mistake I triple checked entered info on my phone display.

"Brilliant"

Wouldn’t go anywhere else, best bundles out there and bundle minutes work in the EU brilliantly too, simply pick your best signal and that’s it, free bundle minutes are there. I have tried most other companies over the years and Asda is by far the best, customer support is 10/10 too. Linked to EE best uk signal and couldn’t find a competitor who could beat Asda. Brilliant.

"Problem activating bundle and poor customer service"

I bought a bundle when I tried to activate it I received a text saying that I didn't have enough credit to activate the bundle, I tried to resolve the issue through customer services but found the man who dealt with my query this morning, unhelpful and patronising. I've managed to send 1 text and now all my credit has expired. I shall be looking for another provider

"Misleading Roaming"

the website is completely misleading. you will be charged for calls and messages at your local roaming destination when travelling in the EU. it is only part of your package if you call or message a UK number. If only in the UK then good value. if going to be travelling then not

"Convoluted billing leads to heinous overcharging"

Asda Mobile may be cheap but their billing structure is so complicated, you will have to be very disciplined to avoid getting stung on data charges.

They have some weird setup where your card is charged in the morning and then you get a 'bundle of data' (say, 1GB, 2GB etc) in the evening. Date to use your phone between the two points and your data is charged at 'out of allowance' rate, something like 5MB per MB

One of my daughters used up £80 of data in 24 hours just by using Spotify on a coach journey. I've had regular problems with bundles not renewing because something like a mobile notification has consumed a few pence of data, then the contract reverts to 5p per MB charges. The text notifications that warn you of this are not clear and definitely not good enough for kids and teenagers.

If you are looking for a cheap and cheerful service, fine, but be very careful if you are looking for a suitable and safe contract for your kids, it may be a false economy. Avoid.

"Good value from Asda Mobile"

I haven't found a cheaper deal anywhere else yet and the service seems good and reliable. I have got a strong signal everywhere I've been so far. Easy to top up without going to the store and buying vouchers, register your card details with them and top up whenever necessary without needing to speak to anyone.

"One of the Best PAYG Deals Around"

One of the best pay as you go sim's IMO. Runs off EE and gets me a great signal. Not the cheapest but the bundles are competitive. Would be great if they lowered the prices for national and international calling and added WiFi Calling like EE has.

"Avoid Asda"

Unfairly high charges outside of their "bundle" pricing scheme. I racked up £30 in data charges over a 36 hour period! They have a convoluted payment structure that leaves the customer exposed to extortionately high prices in the case of honest oversight. An extremely cynical stance from their customer service - "That's just the way it works!" Avoid!

"Excellent PAYG Bundles"

Excellent 30 day pay as go bundles including data/texts/calls from. I've been with them 6 months and their PAYG options are more competitive than most other operators out there. Recommended.

"Excellent coverage via EE"

Asda runs on the EE network. I found the service to be excellent as good as EE on their own as I'm even getting 4G speeds. UK Customers service was excellent when porting my number over to them. Thanks.

Our In-Depth Asda Mobile Review - The Best and Worst Bits About Asda Mobile

Asda is a name familiar to most of us, and the supermarket does offer its own pay as you go mobile services. However, Asda is a piggyback carrier, meaning that though they offer their own contracts, they use EE’s mobile network to provide service. Asda Mobile are a low-cost network, meaning they could be a good deal if you’re not a big phone user.

The Pros and Cons of Using Asda

As with any network, there are both pros and cons to signing up for service with Asda. Before we get into the nitty-gritty, here are the essential good and bad points about going with Asda Mobile:

Pros

  • Pay as you go contracts mean you can save money if you’re a light phone user, and you won’t need to pass a credit check either
  • Plenty of flexibility, you can change a bundle every 30 days or simply use PAYG, so you’re not tied down
  • Mobile tethering is possible, which is rare for a low-cost operator

Cons

  • Pay as you go contracts are generally more expensive for big phone users when compared to traditional mobile contracts
  • Nothing in the way of extras, you’re simply getting phone service, nothing else
  • No WiFi calling and no free WiFi hotspots, meaning you’re dependent on mobile data or WiFi from cafes/restaurants when out and about

Coverage with Asda

Because Asda Mobile use EE’s network to get service, you’ll have the same excellent coverage as EE customers get. Currently, EE (and therefore Asda) have a whopping 99% coverage for 2G and 3G signals, and an impressive 90% coverage for 4G. This should result in excellent reception no matter where you are. However, it’s always a good idea to check your local area using Asda Mobile’s coverage checker found on their home page.

Asda’s Packages

Unlike many big networks, Asda does not offer traditional phone or sim only contracts. All of Asda’s services are offered on a pay as you go basis. This means that you’ll pay for services before you use them, so you can’t get any unexpected bills. The flipside of this is that for very big phone users, pay as you go prices are generally higher than contract prices, in which case, Asda might not be the network for you.

Pay As You Go

If you opt to go the traditional pay as you go SIM route then you simply top up with credit and then that credit is deducted as you use your phone. Rates for pay as you go on Asda Mobile are as follows:

  • 8p per calling minute (including calling voicemail)
  • 4p per text message (25p per MMS)
  • 5p per MB of mobile data

30 Day Bundles

Asda do offer another option though, which could be a better deal, particularly if you’re a big mobile data user. Rather than a traditional pay as you go service, you can instead opt to buy 30-day bundles. You pay for these in advance (just as with PAYG), and receive a certain amount of minutes, texts, and data that can be used inside that 30 day period. There are currently seven bundles available from Asda:

  • 125 minutes, 2000 texts, and 500 MB of mobile data for £5
  • 300 minutes, unlimited texts, and 2 GB of data for £7
  • 600 minutes, unlimited texts, and 4 GB of data for £10
  • 800 minutes, unlimited texts, and 5 GB of data for £12
  • 1000 minutes, unlimited texts, and 8 GB of data for £15
  • Unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, and 12 GB of data for £20
  • Unlimited minutes, unlimited texts, and 15 GB of data for £25

You can order a bundle whenever you like, though credit does expire after 30 days. In addition, Asda also offers a £5 Talk and Text bundle (250 minutes and 2000 texts) if you don’t need data, as well as data, add on bundles for extra data (500 MB of data for £5, 1 GB for £7.50, 4 GB for £12.50, 6 GB for £15).

Credit Expiry

30-day bundles expire after 30 days, as you would expect. However, traditional PAYG credit does not expire with Asda at all. You will need to use your SIM card at least once every 180 days (by calling or sending a text or accessing the internet) to keep your card active, however.

Extras and Features

As a low-cost network, Asda Mobile really doesn’t offer much in the way of extras and features. Roaming is covered inside the EU, but not anywhere else. And since there are no contracts, there’s no data rollover.

Comparison to Other Networks

When compared to other networks, Asda generally comes out as one of the cheapest options around for low users. Their £5 30-day bundle is a bargain compared to other operators, and their £10 bundle (600 minutes, unlimited texts, 3 GB of data) is beaten only by GiffGaff’s £10 bundle (which offers unlimited minutes, rather than just 600). As a general rule, GiffGaff offers slightly better deals, though not by much, but other than that, Asda is a great, budget-friendly choice.

Handsets with Asda Mobile

Asda Mobile is a SIM only operator, which means you will need your own phone when signing up for service. Since there are no contracts you won’t be able to get a contract handset. You’ll need an unlocked mobile phone, and Asda will supply you with a free SIM card.

Wifi Calling and WiFi Hotspots

Unfortunately, Asda Mobile does not offer WiFi calling, though with 99% mobile coverage this shouldn’t be an issue, since you should have good regular reception nearly everywhere. Asda Mobile also do not offer free access to WiFi hotspots, as some other operators do, so you’ll need to depend on your own WiFi, mobile data, or WiFi from cafes and restaurants.

Mobile Tethering

Finally, Asda Mobile does allow mobile tethering, which is relatively unusual for a low-cost network. If you want to use your mobile data to get another device such as a tablet online, then you’re free to do so.

Bottom Line

If you’re a light phone user and you’re looking for a simple, pay as you go plan, then Asda Mobile is a solid choice. If you’re a heavier user, however, you’ll probably be better off looking elsewhere. And if you’re looking for perks, extras, or special features, then you’ll definitely want to look at other operators.
