Serious iPhone Armour: The Urban Armor Gear Case
If you’ve got yourself a new iPhone 6 then you might be being a little careful. An iPhone is a pretty expensive gadget, after all. But what if you didn’t have to be so cautious? What if you could take your iPhone wherever you needed to go, and do whatever you needed to do? Even if that was rock climbing? No, we’re being serious. Most people would be crazy to take their delicate, touch screen iPhone rock climbing, right? But you wouldn’t be if you had this case from Urban Armor Gear… We’ll be honest and say that extreme cases, meaning those that promise to protect your phone come what may, are fairly popular these days. But this, this is one of the best we’ve seen. Don’t believe us? Then read on to find out why you might not be so insane to take that iPhone up a mountain…
What We’re Talking About
We’ll start with the basics. You get a case, looks like pretty much any other case: a solid back panel and an edge that fits around the rim of your phone. There’s an HD screen guard too, you know, one of those transparent sheets that you put over your display to stop it getting scratched. Okay, this case looks a little bulkier than many, but if you’re serious about protecting your phone that’s not really going to bother you. Other than that though, you might not be able to tell the difference between this UAG (Urban Armor Gear) case and any other case. Just because you can’t see a difference though, doesn’t mean that there isn’t one. Actually, many…
How Are You Protected?
There are a couple of things that make modern smart phone such delicate little flowers, and don’t think that the iPhone 6 is any different from any other mobile. One of these is the screen, which shatters and scratches easily. The other is a by product of us all wanting the thinnest, lightest phones around: and that’s just how flimsy construction can be. Drop your phone and you’ll likely shatter the screen, and casings can fly apart damaging internals. All of this is what we’re trying to prevent (especially if you really are considering taking your phone rock climbing).
This case is two separate parts. The first is a transparent HD screen guard. It’s HD, which means that you’ll still be getting an awesome picture (in fact you can’t see any difference at all between a bare screen and one covered by the guard, we know, we checked). The second part is that casing, and that’s where things get cool.
The casing is specially designed from a composite material that combines a hard shell with a soft core. Why? Well, the hard outer shell means that the casing is rigid and resists light impact, whilst the soft core allows the casing to absorb heavy impact. Smart, right? Just how much impact can this case resist? Let’s put it this way: this case carries a MIL STD 810G 516.6 tag. What does that mean? It means that it’s certified to meet military standards for drop testing. That’s right. You know if the army can drop something and not break it then you’re talking about a pretty high level of protection there…
Given that protection is probably what you’re looking for in a case like this, the Scout is ticking all the boxes. But we’ve had problems with extreme cases before, so we’re not satisfied with just the basic protection function. We want more.
Problem Solving? Or Problem Creating?
Alrighty, our absolute number one problem with most thick, protective casing is that frankly, it makes your phone too difficult to use. Stick a thick sheet of plastic over your phone and suddenly pressing that volume button becomes a thing of the past. Taking a protective case off your phone just so you can press a button seems to defy the point of having the casing in the first place, really. Urban Armor Gear have solved this problem (quite satisfactorily, we have to say) with some sweet design tweaks.
First up, buttons are all over size and tactile. Finding them and pressing them is no problem whatsoever. Second, port access is also oversized, meaning it’s easy to plug things in. There really is no need at all to remove the cover for any reason. In fact, you can even press buttons in gloves, that’s how conveniently designed this case is. Okay, so problem number one solved…
Problem number two? Sticking a thick case around the camera lens and flash of your phone generally doesn’t equal great picture quality. And if you’re climbing a mountain, we’re guessing you probably want some great shots of you doing it, right? Again, a design tweak comes to the rescue. That pretty little bezel on the back of the case? Yeah, it’s not just for show. It’s actually designed to reduce flash interference so that you still get the great pics that you need. Sweet.
Oh, and just in case you were wondering, no, you’re not going to be adding to the weight of your phone. This case looks tough because it is tough, but it’s also unexpectedly light…
Bottom Line Time
We see a lot of cases. And a lot of those are supposed to be extreme, to protect your phone not just against the damage of day to day living, but to protect it when you’re doing something out of the ordinary. This though, this is something special. To find a casing that’s so protective, but that also functions well and doesn’t impede your ability to use your phone is fairly unique in our opinion.
Anything we didn’t like? Eh, we weren’t too sold on the black colour sample, it just seemed a bit old fashioned to us. But then, it comes in a range of other colours, including a snazzy orange, so that’s not really a problem. On the whole, this UAG case gets a big thumbs up from us and if you want to check out the full range you can do so on the UAG Website – their range is available for all the latest smartphones and tablets.
