Most Anticipated Mobile Releases for 2015
It’s almost New Year’s, and you know what that means (other than a killer hangover and a promise to quit smoking/hit the gym/take up a new hobby)? There’s a whole new crop of exciting mobiles coming. Here’s a look at some of the most eagerly anticipated new phones for 2015. Fair warning though, some of what we’re telling you is only rumoured so far, but still, this is what we’ve got to look forward to!
The iPhone 7 (or 6S…)
We’ll start with the biggie: the new iPhone is always one of the major releases of the year, and we’re confident that September, 2015 will once again see a new Apple model. What do we know other than that? Not much, unfortunately. Chances are that it’s going to be an iPhone 6S, rather than an iPhone 7, following Apple’s naming tradition of the last few years. There have been rumours about new side-screen tech that will increase display space so that it stretches over the edge of the phone, but these seem pretty unfounded. In general, S models don’t get huge design changes, so most likely this year’s iPhone is going to be a slightly faster version of the regular iPhone 6. Still, you can be assured that customers are going to be lining the streets waiting to get their mitts on the newest Apple offering.
The Samsung Galaxy S6
Given that this year’s Samsung flagship model the S5 didn’t do quite as well as the previous SIII and S4 models we’re hoping for some major upgrades in the S6. Rumour has it that the S6 will be metal build (unlike the plastic S5, but like the newer Galaxy Alpha model), and have the feisty processing power that we’ve come to expect from the maker. Screen wise it’s a toss up, we’re probably going to be getting either a 4K resolution or Quad HD, both of which give awesome display quality, and most likely we’re going to get a bigger 5.5 inch screen too. Samsung are being pretty close mouthed about the S6, but have announced an event in March, so we should see more S6 details released a little before then.
The HTC One M9
Alright, we’re not sure about the name on this one, but the One M9 would make sense after the huge hit that the One M8 has been. The One M8 has been one of the biggest, fastest and all around top endest (yeah, we know that’s not a word) mobiles of 2014, and spring should see an update from HTC. Rumoured specs on the M9 are a Quad HD screen, more processing power, a huge 3500 mAh battery, and a full 5 MP front facing camera. That would give the One M9 a definite leg up on the older M8, and mean some great selfies as well as way less battery charging. Be prepared to pay the price though, HTC flagships don’t come cheap, and this should be no exception.
The LG G4
To be honest the LG G3 has been one of our favourite phones of 2014- full of power, great specs, tons of innovation and a sensible-ish price tag too. And rumours are abounding concerning what’s next for LG. We’re expecting the G4 to launch sometime in May or June of 2015, and we hearing solid rumours of octo-core processing power, and slim-line design that’s going to have the G4 coming in at well under 1cm thick. The G3 already has a Quad HD display, so it’s likely that the G4 won’t see many changes there. One thing we would like to see a bit more battery power, but there’s no word on that yet.
The Sony Xperia Z4
The last of the big, big name releases should be the Sony Xperia Z4, and whilst traditionally Sony have launched two flagships a year, it seems like the Z4 is going to be the only top end model for 2015. It’s going to be tough to improve on the Z3, but the Z4 is rumoured to be another 5.5 inch phablet device, with Quad HD display. Also rumoured is a massive octo-core 2.8 GHz processor, along with 32 GB of standard internal memory and a 20 MP camera. Not a huge jump up from the Xperia Z3, but we’ll take it. Release date should be around March 2015.
Our Bargain Bets
So far, we’ve looked at the up coming flagship phones, but there are two budget models that we’re chomping at the bit to get our hands on. The first, strangely, comes from Tesco, and is probably going to be called the Tesco Hudl Smart phone. Given what Tesco’s Hudl tablet has done to the market (i.e. made a decently specced tablet very affordable) we’re expecting a lot from a smart phone. All we know so far is that it’s going to be high spec and “aggressively priced.” The Hudl Smart phone was supposed to be released in time for Christmas, but Tesco have delayed the launch to an unspecified date.
The second budget buy we’re awaiting is tentatively called the OnePlus Two. When the OnePlus One was launched by its Chinese manufacturer early in 2014 it made quite a splash as a super high spec phone with a low end price tag. However, purchasing was by invitation only and it was tough to get your hands on one of these babies. Rumour has it that an upgrade is going to be a full market release, however, and that could mean that the OnePlus Two is going to be the best bargain of 2015.
2015 is sure to see some awesome new mobiles being released, and we’re sure that one of the above models is going to be a must have. What we’re not likely to see this year is any big tech advances. Most of the big names are looking simply to upgrade on their 2014 models, so innovation isn’t really a huge priority. Still, with more power and speed as well as better looking screens (though probably not bigger displays, phones are still maxing out at around 5.5 inches) we’re still going to be getting some sweet new devices.
